China’s energy security is undergoing a significant transformation with the increasing supplies of natural gas from the Yamal natural gas project in the resource-rich Arctic region. This comes at a crucial time as China faces a severe shortage of natural gas, especially in the northern regions. According to a top executive from China National Petroleum Corp (CNPC), the country’s annual imports from the Yamal project will play a crucial role in securing China’s energy needs and ensuring a steady, long-term supply.
Jiang Qi, the general manager of CNPC Russia, a subsidiary of CNPC, emphasized the importance of China’s imports from the Yamal project in boosting the country’s oil and gas reserves. He stated that China will take more than 4 million metric tons of liquefied natural gas from Russia’s Yamal project each year once it reaches full operational capacity. This substantial increase in supply is a direct result of CNPC’s investment in the project, with the company acquiring a 20 percent stake in Oao Novatek’s $27 billion Yamal project back in September 2013.
The collaboration between China and Russia in the energy sector has been mutually beneficial, with Jiang highlighting the natural complementarities between the two countries. He pointed out that a long-term oil and gas cooperation framework has been established through projects like the Sino-Russia crude oil transmission pipeline and the natural gas pipeline currently under construction. Additionally, the Yamal project has paved the way for the construction of the Northeast Passage in the Arctic Ocean, a sea route that directly links China and Europe.
The Impact of the Yamal Project on Global Trade and Economic Development
The Yamal liquefied natural gas project has not only bolstered China’s energy security but has also had a significant impact on global trade and economic development. With as many as 54 freight vessels already traversing the Northeast Passage, the project has facilitated the transportation of LNG between China and Europe, resulting in lower freight costs and increased trade efficiency. As the project expands, more LNG is expected to be transported through the sea route, further enhancing economic ties between the two regions.
Chinese enterprises have played a crucial role in the construction and operation of the Yamal project, with 85 percent of the project’s module construction being handled by Chinese companies. These enterprises have also built seven transport ships and are responsible for the operation of 14 out of the 15 LNG carriers involved in the project. According to CNPC, the total contract amount for the project’s construction reached $7.8 billion, while the shipping contract amounted to $8.5 billion.
