Arctic Gas Supply Bolstering China’s Energy Security
China’s efforts to secure its winter heat supply have received a significant boost with the annual imports of natural gas from the Yamal project in the Arctic region. The country is currently facing a severe shortage of natural gas, particularly in northern China, making the Arctic gas supply crucial for meeting the increasing demand. According to an executive from China National Petroleum Corp (CNPC), the imports from the Yamal project will play a vital role in enhancing China’s energy security by ensuring a steady and long-term supply of natural gas.
Jiang Qi, the general manager of CNPC Russia, a subsidiary of CNPC, emphasized the importance of China’s imports from the Yamal project in bolstering the country’s oil and gas reserves. He highlighted that the project will contribute significantly to China’s energy security by providing a reliable source of natural gas. CNPC, as an investor in the Yamal project, is set to take more than 4 million metric tons of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Russia each year once the project reaches full operational capacity.
In 2013, CNPC acquired a 20 percent stake in Oao Novatek’s $27 billion Yamal project for $5.4 billion, marking a substantial investment in securing China’s energy supply. Jiang underscored the strategic cooperation between China and Russia in the energy sector, citing the establishment of a long-term oil and gas cooperation framework through projects like the Sino-Russia crude oil transmission pipeline and the natural gas pipeline currently under construction.

Moreover, Chinese shipyards have actively participated in the construction of the Yamal project, gaining valuable experience and technology in oil and gas exploration in the Arctic region. Jiang pointed out that Chinese enterprises have been heavily involved in the project, responsible for 85 percent of the module construction and the operation of a significant portion of the LNG carriers.
