The first overall pick in the 2017 NHL Draft, Nico Hischier, has just made history with the New Jersey Devils. The 25-year-old forward has become the player to score two goals in the same game the fastest, doing so in just 10 seconds! His two goals were scored very early in the second period, just 34 seconds in and 44 seconds into the second period. However, despite his impressive performance and record, it was not enough for the Devils to win the game as they fell in overtime by a score of 6-5 against the Washington Capitals.
Looking back at Hischier, the Devils’ captain is off to a great start this season, dominating in both ends of the ice since the season began. He is currently averaging a point per game with 5 goals and 3 assists for 8 points in 8 games. When I watch the way the Devils’ captain plays, I have the impression that he could quickly be considered a serious candidate for the Selke Trophy awarded to the best defensive forward in the NHL. Hischier is always on the ice for important moments and plays his role perfectly. In fact, he is excelling more and more in faceoffs, reminding me of a certain Patrice Bergeron, a multiple-time Selke winner. It will be interesting to follow the season of the former Halifax Mooseheads forward in the QMJHL, as he seems to be becoming a better player year after year.
