Last Sunday (September 22, 2024), a three-person rope team attempted to climb the Kopftörlgrat to reach the highest peak in the Kaiser Mountains, the Ellmauer Halt. The trio found themselves overwhelmed by the winter conditions in the climbing route and had to be rescued.
Despite the heavy snowfall of the past week, three individuals attempted to climb the Kopftörlgrat to reach the Ellmauer Halt. They chose the challenging and alpine-secured Kopftörlgrat. Due to the snow masses, the rope team progressed very slowly and eventually found themselves blocked by a vertical wall late in the evening.
Shortly before 7 p.m., the climbers made a distress call to receive directions for a emergency descent in the middle of the ridge. According to krone.at, the mountain rescue team in Scheffau advised the climbers against continuing and offered them a helicopter rescue in the fading daylight. Initially, the men declined the offer.
It is unclear from the reports whether the group later contacted the rescuers again or was eventually persuaded to accept the rescue. In any case, the use of a helicopter equipped with night flying gear became necessary. The crew was able to locate the climbers on the ridge in a chimney in partially overhanging terrain and lower a rescuer to them via winch.
The rescuer evacuated the mountaineers one by one and flew them unharmed to the valley. The mission was concluded by midnight.
The Kopftörlgrat to the Ellmauer Halt is a challenging climbing route for experienced alpine climbers who can navigate independently in unmarked terrain: exposed walking areas and climbing difficulties up to grade IV extend over the 1400-meter-long ridge. Those who take longer than five hours to reach the lighthouse should opt for the well-marked emergency descent route!
