A shark attacked a surfer off the coast of Maui in Hawaii, leaving the 61-year-old man severely injured. The surfer was riding a wave at Waiehu Beach Park when the shark bit him, according to Maui County officials. Police quickly arrived at the scene to stop the bleeding with a tourniquet as the surfer’s right leg was almost completely severed just below the knee.
The man remained conscious during treatment on the beach and was transported to a hospital in Wailuku in critical condition. He mentioned that he did not see the shark approaching before the attack.
Following the incident, the beach was closed, and authorities instructed people to stay out of the water in the area. The warning was in place until at least Saturday afternoon local time but could be extended if sharks were sighted.
This attack comes shortly after the death of renowned surfer Tamayo Perry, who was killed by a shark while surfing off Oahu’s North Shore in June.
