Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer Zeekr is making plans to introduce two premium EV models to the Japanese market in 2025. The company is aiming to establish showrooms in Tokyo and the Osaka area prior to the launch later this year. This move follows Zeekr’s recent announcement of expanding into other right-hand-drive markets such as Hong Kong, Thailand, and Singapore with the Zeekr 009 van and the X crossover, which are priced at RMB 439,000 and RMB 200,000 ($61,000 and $27,900) respectively in China.

Vice president Chen Yu expressed the company’s goal to achieve an $18 billion market valuation before launching an initial public offering (IPO) in the US. Zeekr is also looking to expand its presence to 50 countries and regions by the end of this year, up from the current count of 30. Additionally, the company has set its sights on entering the South Korean market by 2026.

In comparison, rival electric vehicle manufacturer BYD introduced its most expensive electric sedan, the Seal, in Japan with a price tag of 5.28 million yen ($35,730). This reflects a significant markup of over 40% compared to its price in China. Despite the higher price point, BYD managed to sell 1,446 units of its Atto 3 and Dolphin EVs in Japan last year, as reported by Nikkei.

The expansion into the Japanese market signifies Zeekr’s strategic approach to establishing a global presence and competing with established players in the electric vehicle industry. By offering premium EV models and setting up showrooms in key locations, Zeekr aims to capture market share and attract consumers in Japan who are increasingly interested in sustainable transportation options.

With the growing demand for electric vehicles worldwide, Zeekr’s entry into the Japanese market comes at a pivotal time when consumers are seeking eco-friendly alternatives to traditional gasoline-powered vehicles. The company’s focus on innovation, technology, and sustainability positions it as a formidable player in the EV market, poised for success in Japan and beyond.

As Zeekr prepares to introduce its premium EV models in Japan, the company’s strategic expansion plans and commitment to sustainability are set to make a significant impact on the automotive industry. With a strong emphasis on quality, performance, and customer experience, Zeekr is well-positioned to establish itself as a leading electric vehicle brand in the Japanese market and contribute to the global shift towards sustainable mobility.
