German Team Aims for Medals at the 2024 Road Cycling World Championships
The late summer or early fall – depending on where you are – in the world of road cycling is marked by continental and world championships. After the 2024 European Championships in mid-September, the World Championships at the end of the month are next on the schedule.
From September 22nd to September 29th, the fierce battle for various rainbow jerseys will take place on the streets of Zurich, Switzerland. What makes this event special is that the World Championships of Para Road Cycling will be held in parallel, with a total of 64 legendary World Champion jerseys being awarded at these competitions!
German Team Preparation for the World Championships
The German team for the Road Cycling World Championships includes a mix of experienced riders and emerging talents. The lineup for the Elite Men’s races was recently announced, with a total of eleven participants nominated for road races, individual time trials, and the mixed relay team time trial. Among them are seven different riders from Germany.
For the prestigious road race covering 273.9 km on September 29th, a strong team of climbers has been nominated. With approximately 4400 meters of elevation gain, it’s no easy feat. The team includes German Champion 2024 Marco Brenner, Georg Steinhauser (stage winner at the Giro d’Italia 2024), and Georg Zimmermann (stage runner-up at the Tour de France 2023), along with established riders Maximilian Schachmann (Team Time Trial World Champion 2018 and winner of Paris-Nice 2020, 2021) and Tour de France stage winner Simon Geschke, who is approaching the end of his career and this will be his last World Championships.
One of the most exciting additions to the team is Florian Lipowitz, who has been making waves in the cycling world. The 23-year-old former biathlete impressed everyone with his performance at this year’s Vuelta a España, where he played a crucial role in helping his team captain, Primož Roglič, secure the victory. Lipowitz’s strong riding helped Roglič clinch his fourth overall Vuelta title, while Lipowitz himself finished seventh overall and second in the young rider classification. His remarkable achievements have positioned him as a strong contender for the upcoming World Championships.
Challenging Competition Ahead
The competition at the World Championships is expected to be fierce, with top riders like Tadej Pogačar (winner of this year’s Tour de France and Giro d’Italia), Primož Roglič (multiple Vuelta winner), and Remco Evenepoel (double Olympic champion at Paris 2024) all set to compete. It will be a test of skill and endurance for the German team as they aim for a podium finish in the various events.
The German women’s team is also gearing up for the World Championships, with a strong lineup that includes Franziska Koch, Clara Koppenburg, Liane Lippert, Hannah Ludwig, Linda Riedmann, and Antonia Niedermaier for the road races, and Koch and Niedermaier for the individual time trials. The Junior team is equally promising, with riders like Messane Bräutigam, Magdalena Leis, Caoilinn Littbarski-Gray, Joelle Amelie Messemer, and Laura Nollau set to compete in the junior categories.
With a combination of experience and young talent, the German team is poised to make an impact at the 2024 Road Cycling World Championships. As they face off against the world’s best riders, all eyes will be on Florian Lipowitz and Max Schachmann as they aim to bring home medals for Germany.
