The water quality is better than before
According to NRW Environment Minister Oliver Krischer, a lot has already been done when it comes to pollutants in the water. The water quality has improved significantly compared to the 20th century, thanks in part to modern sewage treatment plants.
“After dealing with the organic pollutants that used to cause foam and dirt in the waters, we are now focusing on trace substances, and we will also get rid of them in the coming years.”
Oliver Krischer (Green Party), NRW Environment Minister
Still many pollutants in the water
However, rivers and lakes are still heavily polluted with many contaminants, not only in NRW, according to the State Agency for Nature, Environment, and Consumer Protection (LANUV). This includes toxic hydrocarbons produced during combustion, as well as mercury and microplastics. LANUV expects that even in 2027, all rivers and lakes in North Rhine-Westphalia will still fail to achieve the “good” rating.
Additional Information:
Despite the efforts made to improve water quality in rivers and lakes in NRW, there are still significant challenges ahead. The presence of toxic substances such as hydrocarbons, mercury, and microplastics continues to impact the health of aquatic ecosystems and pose risks to human health.
One of the key factors contributing to water pollution is agricultural runoff, which carries pesticides, fertilizers, and other harmful chemicals into water bodies. Efforts to regulate agricultural practices and promote sustainable farming methods are crucial in reducing water pollution and improving overall water quality.
Furthermore, public awareness and community involvement play a vital role in protecting water resources. By educating the public about the importance of clean water and encouraging responsible waste disposal practices, we can all contribute to preserving the health and integrity of our rivers and lakes for future generations. It is essential that government agencies, environmental organizations, and individuals work together to address the ongoing challenges and strive towards a cleaner and healthier environment for all.
