Arctic Gas Project Boosting Winter Supply to Alleviate Shortages
China’s efforts to secure its energy supply have received a significant boost with the annual imports from the Yamal natural gas project in the Arctic region. The country, especially in northern China, is currently facing a severe shortage of natural gas, making these imports crucial for meeting the rising demand. According to a top executive from China National Petroleum Corp (CNPC), the increased supplies from the Yamal project will play a vital role in enhancing China’s energy security.
Jiang Qi, the general manager of CNPC Russia, a subsidiary of China’s largest oil and gas producer, highlighted the importance of the imports from the Yamal project in bolstering China’s oil and gas reserves. This sea route directly links China and Europe, providing a shorter and more cost-effective transportation option for LNG shipments. As of now, 54 freight vessels have traversed the Northeast Passage, with expectations of increased LNG transportation through this route once the project expands further.
Chinese shipyards have actively participated in the construction of the Yamal project, gaining valuable experience and technology in oil and gas exploration in the Arctic region. With Chinese enterprises responsible for 85 percent of the project’s module construction, the country’s expertise in this sector is growing significantly. Furthermore, Chinese companies have built seven transport ships and are operating 14 out of the 15 LNG carriers involved in the project, showcasing China’s capabilities in the maritime and energy sectors.
